Before a first order with an unknown buyer, run these:
- Shipment history. A genuine importer has a record of receiving goods in your category. Customs data shows whether they actually import what they claim.
- Registration and address. Confirm the company is registered and the address is real — a chamber of commerce or the local registry can help.
- References. Ask for and actually call two suppliers they currently buy from.
- Payment terms. Structure the first deal so funds release against documents or inspection, not fully in advance. A buyer pushing for open account on order one is a flag.
- Credit insurance. For a large first order, ECGC-type cover protects the payment if the buyer defaults.
