HS codes
Seafood exports fall under HS chapter 03. Classify precisely — the first six digits are international, the rest are India's ITC-HS extension. Your HS code drives duty, FTA eligibility and the paperwork the buyer's customs will expect.
Export requirements & certifications
- Registration with MPEDA (Marine Products Export Development Authority) and an approved processing/export unit.
- Health certificate from the competent authority confirming compliance with the destination's food-safety regime (US FDA/HACCP, EU catch-certificate scheme, or the equivalent).
- HACCP-certified processing; cold-chain and traceability records from catch/farm to shipment.
- Species-specific labelling and, for wild-caught product, IUU (illegal fishing) catch documentation for the EU.
Requirements change and are buyer- and destination-specific — confirm the current rules with your export promotion council and the buyer before you ship.
Documentation
Every seafood shipment needs the core set: commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin (preferential where an FTA applies), and the category-specific certificates above. See the full export documentation checklist and the seafood export guide.
Finding buyers
The reliable method: identify companies that already import seafood in your target market from customs data, reach the named procurement contact, and open on the trade signal — not a generic pitch. EximHub does that end to end. Read how to find export buyers or how customs trade data works.
