HS codes
Spice exports fall under HS chapters 09 (0904–0910). Classify precisely — the first six digits are international, the rest are India's ITC-HS extension. Your HS code drives duty, FTA eligibility and the paperwork the buyer's customs will expect.
Export requirements & certifications
- Spices Board of India registration (RCMC) and, for many spices, a Certificate of Registration as an exporter.
- Phytosanitary certificate from the plant-quarantine authority for whole/unprocessed spices.
- Compliance with the destination country's maximum residue limits (pesticides) and aflatoxin / Sudan-dye limits — EU and US testing is strict.
- FSSAI registration for the manufacturing/packing unit; many buyers also want ISO 22000 / HACCP / BRCGS.
- Steam-sterilisation or ETO-free treatment records where the buyer specifies.
Requirements change and are buyer- and destination-specific — confirm the current rules with your export promotion council and the buyer before you ship.
Documentation
Every spice shipment needs the core set: commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin (preferential where an FTA applies), and the category-specific certificates above. See the full export documentation checklist and the spice export guide.
Finding buyers
The reliable method: identify companies that already import spice in your target market from customs data, reach the named procurement contact, and open on the trade signal — not a generic pitch. EximHub does that end to end. Read how to find export buyers or how customs trade data works.
