HS codes
Steel exports fall under HS chapters 72-73. Classify precisely — the first six digits are international, the rest are India's ITC-HS extension. Your HS code drives duty, FTA eligibility and the paperwork the buyer's customs will expect.
Export requirements & certifications
- IEC and RCMC from EEPC India (Engineering Export Promotion Council), which covers steel and engineering goods.
- Mill test certificates / material test reports to the buyer's specified standard (ASTM, EN, IS).
- Anti-dumping and safeguard duty checks — steel is one of the most frequently investigated categories in major markets; confirm the current position for your product and destination before quoting.
- Third-party inspection (SGS/BV/TUV) is commonly required before shipment.
Requirements change and are buyer- and destination-specific — confirm the current rules with your export promotion council and the buyer before you ship.
Documentation
Every steel shipment needs the core set: commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin (preferential where an FTA applies), and the category-specific certificates above. See the full export documentation checklist and the steel export guide.
Finding buyers
The reliable method: identify companies that already import steel in your target market from customs data, reach the named procurement contact, and open on the trade signal — not a generic pitch. EximHub does that end to end. Read how to find steel buyers, how to find export buyers or how customs trade data works.
