HS codes
Sugar exports fall under HS 17. Classify precisely — the first six digits are international, the rest are India's ITC-HS extension. Your HS code drives duty, FTA eligibility and the paperwork the buyer's customs will expect.
Export requirements & certifications
- Registration with APEDA; compliance with India's sugar export policy and quota rules where applicable (these change year to year - verify current rules).
- Phytosanitary/quality certification and FSSAI compliance for the processing unit.
- Destination food-safety compliance and sugar-grade/polarisation specification to the buyer's contract.
- Certificate of origin; fumigation certificate where required.
Requirements change and are buyer- and destination-specific — confirm the current rules with your export promotion council and the buyer before you ship.
Documentation
Every sugar shipment needs the core set: commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin (preferential where an FTA applies), and the category-specific certificates above. See the full export documentation checklist and the sugar export guide.
Finding buyers
The reliable method: identify companies that already import sugar in your target market from customs data, reach the named procurement contact, and open on the trade signal — not a generic pitch. EximHub does that end to end. Read how to find sugar buyers, how to find export buyers or how customs trade data works.
