HS codes
Timber exports fall under HS chapter 44. Classify precisely — the first six digits are international, the rest are India's ITC-HS extension. Your HS code drives duty, FTA eligibility and the paperwork the buyer's customs will expect.
Export requirements & certifications
- IEC and RCMC; compliance with India's timber-sourcing and forest-produce regulations.
- Phytosanitary certificate and ISPM-15 treatment (heat treatment or fumigation) for wood packaging material itself.
- Legality/chain-of-custody documentation — FSC or PEFC certification is increasingly required, especially for the EU (EUDR) and UK/US markets.
- Moisture content and grading to the buyer's specification.
Requirements change and are buyer- and destination-specific — confirm the current rules with your export promotion council and the buyer before you ship.
Documentation
Every timber shipment needs the core set: commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin (preferential where an FTA applies), and the category-specific certificates above. See the full export documentation checklist and the timber export guide.
Finding buyers
The reliable method: identify companies that already import timber in your target market from customs data, reach the named procurement contact, and open on the trade signal — not a generic pitch. EximHub does that end to end. Read how to find timber buyers, how to find export buyers or how customs trade data works.
