HS codes
Tobacco exports fall under HS 24. Classify precisely — the first six digits are international, the rest are India's ITC-HS extension. Your HS code drives duty, FTA eligibility and the paperwork the buyer's customs will expect.
Export requirements & certifications
- Registration with the Tobacco Board of India (mandatory for tobacco export).
- Destination-specific import permits and duty compliance - tobacco is a heavily regulated, high-duty category in most markets, verify current rules for the specific destination.
- Phytosanitary certificate; grade, moisture and leaf-type specification to the buyer's contract.
- Certificate of origin; packaging and labelling compliant with destination health-warning requirements.
Requirements change and are buyer- and destination-specific — confirm the current rules with your export promotion council and the buyer before you ship.
Documentation
Every tobacco shipment needs the core set: commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill, bill of lading or airway bill, certificate of origin (preferential where an FTA applies), and the category-specific certificates above. See the full export documentation checklist and the tobacco export guide.
Finding buyers
The reliable method: identify companies that already import tobacco in your target market from customs data, reach the named procurement contact, and open on the trade signal — not a generic pitch. EximHub does that end to end. Read how to find tobacco buyers, how to find export buyers or how customs trade data works.
